Get to Know 4 Marfa Locals

Marfa has transformed into a hotspot for creative spirits and out of towners, attracted by the art galleries and highly curated boutiques. However we cannot forget about the people who have made the small West Texas town what it is today. We like to call ourselves Marfans!

  1. Meet Ramona Tejada: Burrito Queen

A Texas sized meal made from scratch. Everything at Marfa Burritos is handmade from the salsa to the tortillas. The woman behind the treasure is Ramona Tejada. Moving to Marfa from Mexico to pursue the American dream, she opened her business with her husband in 1995 with only $45. Marfa Burrito still operates from Ramona’s home, the menu is printed on neon pink posters and everyone must pay with cash. Marfa Burrito has had its share of visitors from locals, tourists and celebrities (most notably Anthony Bourdain), the kitchen stays humble and welcoming because of Ramona.

  1. Meet Buck Johnston: Owner of Wrong Store

Buck, a graphic designer, and Camp, a sculptor, moved to Marfa to find inspiration from the vast landscape and diverse culture of the State of Texas. Opening the effortlessly cool shop-gallery called the Wrong Store together in 2010. The store’s concept is centered around Camp’s art objects – wooden drug money, dairy queen ice cream cones, bottles of tequila – WRONG. Co-founders live together in a hot pink house with three dogs, one of which is a 16 year old pet coyote.

  1. Meet Donald Judd: Renowned Legacy

Judd came to far West Texas in 1971 from New York looking for space to integrate art, architecture and landscape. Looking at a map for the least populated place within America, he landed in Marfa, Texas. Over 50 years later, he has left a legacy and a town driven by creatives.

  1. Meet Mark Scott: Pit Master

The man behind the James Beard awarded BBQ joint, Mark Scott. Native to Marfa, he opened Convenience West in 2017 with partners Kaki Aufdengarten, Adam Bork and Katy Rose. If BBQ can be considered an art form, and in Texas it can, then Mark Scott is a true artist.

As Marfa continues to be a popular destination and renowned art haven, it is important for visitors to enjoy the offerings Marfa has to share while staying respect of the locals that make this place so special.
